The rich, the powerful and the fashionable created Newport’s legendary mansions during the 1890’s and early 1900’s. The Elms, Chateau-sur-Mer, Marble House, Chepstow, Rosecliff … Italian palazzos, English castles, and French chateaus set in gardens of appropriate richness. Elaborate garden parties with Chinese pagodas, French pavilions and Turkish tents were put out for one evening’s entertainment. And, it was de rigueur forthe typical Gilded Age Newport property to be maintained by a minimum of 15 gardeners. Enjoy the world renowned holdings of The Preservation Society of Newport County as well as selected private cottages” behind their private hedges.
